The Monte Palace Madeira Garden covers an area of 70,000 m2 and is home to an abundant collection of exotic plants from all four corners of the world, along with swans and ducks, which inhabit the central lagoon, peacocks and chickens, which roam freely in the other areas of the garden. In the garden's central pond, visitors can also admire the beauty and majesty of the swans.
The Church of Nossa Senhora do Monte was built in the 18th century on the foundations of the primitive chapel of the 15th century, by order of Adão Gonçalves, son of Gonçalo Aires Ferreira, squire of the Infant and settler of the island. Later, due to the needs of the cult and the increase in the number of the faithful, the church was enlarged. In 1748 an earthquake destroyed the church and it was rebuilt in 1818.
Located in Ponta do Garajau, the Cristo Rei viewpoint offers a unique perspective over this Nature Reserve. It owes its name to the majestic statue erected on this spot in 1927.
